MAINTENANCE

Treatment and maintenance of terracotta

The surface of the terracotta is not finished if it is not treated and protected appropriately. For some types of terracotta this treatment operation is done by us directly in the factory, so that they are already finished. For all other terracotta products, the protection operation must be carried out on site, mandatory in internal environments, not necessary outdoors where it is even not recommended if it tends to completely eliminate the natural transpiration of the terracotta, a characteristic which favors the evaporation of humidity underlying otherwise deleterious.

The “treatment” is a complex intervention, which consists of some distinct operations:

1) WASHING 2) TREATMENT 3) MAINTENANCE

The first two phases are usually carried out on an open construction site and only once, the third is repetitive and is carried out simply by the user himself during the life and use of the terracotta surface and also serves to remove dirt.

WASHING

A fundamental operation
for the treatment

It must be carried out on a dry floor (it takes approximately 20-30 days after laying with mortar and approximately 10-15 days for laying with glue, depending on the weather conditions and seasons).

1) Wet the floor with water and then wash and scrub the floor with Buffered Acid for a few minutes. Be very careful to remove any residue of lime, cement or glue from the tiles. 2)Proceed with a thorough rinse (until clear water is obtained) before the floor dries after cleaning with acid.

Waiting times after washing vary from 3 to 10 days depending on the season, the type of terracotta and the type of installation. There are many types of treatment and many valid products on the market, from the most natural to the most modern.

Traditional treatment with paste wax:
1) Spread the basic product (liquid wax with impregnating and leveling function) with a sponge or brush.
2) After 24 hours, uniformly apply a coat of creamy paste wax to brush, to better spread and absorb the product
3) After 48 hours, apply a second coat of creamy paste wax.

Treatment with liquid waxes: The application operations are much simpler than traditional treatments as they consist exclusively of subsequent applications, with a brush or rag, of self-levelling and self-polishing hydroemulsions. self-polishing.

(it is advisable to let the air circulate in the room even in winter to facilitate the evaporation of humidity)

MAINTENANCE

For cleaning, use neutral detergents or wash with water

The floor thus obtained does not need anything else; periodically, depending on wear, you can use a liquid maintenance wax, easily available on the market.
